Our favorite local bird site is home to a number of hawks. Most appear to be of the Red Shouldered variety but some could be Red Tailed. We are not yet skilled enough to tell the difference. In any case, those we’ve spotted are magnificent creatures and it’s endlessly fascinating to observe them.
For example, this one patiently waited while I shot a few portraits …
… then decided it had enough posing.
On several occasions we’ve seen Mockingbirds dive-bomb perching hawks, perhaps because nests are threatened. Generally, though, the hawks don’t seem overly concerned but eventually they fly off.
The Hawk above and below definitely is a “Red Shoulder,” a species that has a yellow “cere” atop its beak.
