Before Watergate …
In the summer of 1970, I was a newly hired police reporter at the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News. However, I also was a photographer of sorts and was one among many assigned to that year’s Major League All-Star Game in Cincinnati. President Richard M. Nixon was to throw out the first ball and my task was to grab some images of him. Below are several frames I shot as he was escorted to his seat. They must have been captured after his pitching duty so why don’t I have images of that? After 44 years, I don’t remember.
I took these with a 35mm camera and probably processed the film myself in the Daily News darkroom. The surviving negatives are marred by dust and scratches, most of which I’ve left intact in these versions. Most negatives were kept by the newspapers for which I worked but somehow I wound up with a few from this event.
The tall gentleman to Nixon’s right in each shot is Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn.
The game was played on July 14, 1970 at Riverfront Stadium. Just four years later, he would become the first U.S. president to resign.
